On Friday 16 March 2012 The Victoria Cross of Brigadier Charles Edward Hudson VC was re-united with the remainder of his medals when they were presented at a ceremony in the Regimental Gallery at Nottingham Castle by Mark Hudson the grandson of Brig Hudson VC. The medals were received by the Acting Chairman of the Museum Trustees Lieutenant Colonel Des Fitzgerald.

The medals received into the Museum were;

DSO and Bar, MC, French Croix de Guerre, Italian Silver Medal for Military Valour, K St J - Order of St John of Jerusalem, British War Medal, Victory Medal + MID Oakleaf, 1914-15 Star, 1939 - 1945 Star, France & Germany Star, Defence Medal 1939 - 1945, War Medal 1939 - 1945, King George VI Coronation Medal 1937, Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Medal 1953, CB

Victoria CrossCharles Edward Hudson DSO and Bar MC Captain, Temporary Lieutenant Colonel

 

The Victoria Cross of Brigadier Charles Edward Hudson VC CB DSO MC JP DL who won the gallantry award on 15 June 1918 in Italy with the 11th Battalion The Sherwood Foresters was presented to the Regimental Museum on 28 May 2003 at a ceremony in Nottingham Castle by his son Miles Hudson OBE and grandson Mark Hudson. The medal was received by the Colonel of the Regiment and Chairman of the Museum Trustees Colonel Jonny Hackett CBE

Charles Edward Hudson, born on 29 May 1892 in Derby (where his father, also a Sherwood Forester was the Adjutant of the 1st Volunteer Battalion), was commissioned into The Sherwood Foresters on 17 November 1917 and joined the 11th Battalion.

Whilst serving with this Battalion on the Western Front in France and Belgium he won the Distinguished Service Order on two occasions and the Military Cross. It was when he was commanding the 11th Battalion in Northern Italy that he won the VC. He was also awarded the Croix de Guerre and the Italian Silver Medal for Military Valour.

Lieutenant A L King MC

 

 

On 8 May 2003 the Military Cross of Lieutenant A L King was donated to the Sherwood Foresters Collection by his niece Mrs Brennan of Glenrothes, Fife.

Lieutenant King was commissioned into the Sherwood Foresters in 1942 and attached to 1st Battalion the Royal Hampshire Regiment. He landed in Normandy on D-Day 6 June 1944 at Gold Beach where in an engagement with the German 736 Grenadier Regiment he won the Military Cross.

Distinguished Conduct Medal11201 Sergeant william Roberts DCM

 

 

 

 

The DCM of 11201 Sergeant William Roberts 17th Battalion The Sherwood Foresters was presented by his grandson Mr A Cross and received by Mr Cliff Housley, Assistant Curator on behalf of the trustees.

 

Sergeant William Roberts was a regular soldier who joined the 1st Battalion The Sherwood Foresters in India before the outbreak of the First World War. He was with the Battalion when it deployed to France in november 1914 and remained with it until being wounded in July 1916 on the Somme. Following his recovery he was transferred to the 17th Battalion where on 17 June 1917 on the Messines Ridge of the Ypres Salient he and three others moved to outflank an enemy patrol. His citation reads; "For conspicious gallantry and devotion to duty in attacking and attempting to cut off a hostile patrol which was raiding a listening post. Shortly afterwards he was wounded, for the fourth time during the campaign and the successful repulse of this raid was entirely due to his dash and intiative."

The DCM of 5684 Sergeant Edward Paul 2nd Battalion The Sherwood Foresters who won the gallantry award on 15 June 1915 was presented to the Museum on 29 August 2003 by his youngest son William and received by Captain John Ford MBE on behalf of the trustees.

 

Sergeant Paul enlisted in 1896 and served with the 2nd Battalion The Sherwood Foresters until his discharge in 1918. His bravery was gazetted on 30 June 1915: "For conspicious gallantry in carrying out all kinds of dangerous work, for which he has shown himself as always ready to volunteer."

Military Medal6941 Pte E Stevenson MM

The Military Medal of 6941 Private Edward Stevenson 11th Battalion The Sherwood Foresters was presented by his grandson Mr E Stagg on 21 January 2003 and received by Major Oliver Hackett, Curator on behalf of the trustees.

On 24 January 1916 the Battalion was holding a sector to the East of Armentiers near Quesnoy when Private Stevenson won his medal for crossing open ground under fire to assist and render first aid to an officer of the Royal Artillery who had been wounded.

The Military Medal and Bar won by Sergeant Arthur Goulding of the Sherwood Foresters for bravery in the First World War was presented to the Regimental Museum by his Nephew Mr Charles Goulding on 24 March 2004.

The Military Medal and two other Campaign Medals were accepted into the Museum Collection by Colonel J R M Hackett CBE, Colonel of the Regiment and Chairman of The Sherwood Foresters Museum Trustees.

On 19 August 1917 during a battalion attack on the German defences in the Southern Somme area he was awarded his first Military Medal for his leadership and gallantry and ability in consolidating the position after the attack. Then on 22 October 1917 during an attack in the Ypres Salient he won a Bar to his MM for giving chase to a German Soldier who was observing his company's position. He shot the enemy soldier and recovered much valuable information.

Military MedalCorporal Charles Ellis Bryan MM

The Military Medal won by Corporal Charles Ellis Bryan of the Sherwood Foresters for bravery in the First World War was presented to the Regimental Museum by his daughter Mrs M Burton on 4 February 2005.

The Military Medal and Campaign medals of Corporal Charles Ellis Bryan were accepted into the Museum Collection by Lieutenant Colonel D J Elsam MBE Regimental Trustee.

On 1 July 1916 the 8th Battalion took part in the diversionary attack on Gommecourt on the Northern flank of the Somme offensive. The attack met with stiff resistance and was repulsed, the battalions suffering great losses. In a confused situation the 8th Battalion was ordered to carry out a daylight recconnaissance patrol to ascertain the situation. Cpl Bryan volunteered. He stayed out in front of the Battalion for some time and brought back some useful information. For excellent and valuable patrol work he was awarded the MM
