ILLUSTRATED COMMUNITY TALKS

The illustrated talks are given by Mr Cliff Housley a Museum Trustee and Regimental Historian, and Mr Michael Kirkby a freelance Military Historian. The minimum fee for Community Lectures is £35.00 per lecture.

Regimental Historian Cliff Housley

For Genealogy/Family History Groups in the Notts/Derby area. Special arrangements can be made for Cliff Housley and/or our Archivist Mr Eddie Edwards to attend meetings with the Sherwood Foresters Regimental Database, which currently holds details on over 109,000 officers and soldiers from 1741 to 1970 and over 10,000 photographs.

'Bossendon Wood' The strange story of the last battle fought on English soil by the 45th Foot 1st Nottinghamshire Regiment. (50 mins)

'History of The Sherwood Foresters' A review of the History of the Regiment from 1741 to amalgamation in 1970. (60+ mins)

'Sewing is not just for Ladies' A fascinating look at military and soldiers needlework. (45 mins + time to look at actual artefacts)

'Sweetheart Brooches' Collecting this unique form of jewellery. (45 mins + time to examine brooches)

'The Robin Hood Rifles' The story of Nottingham's very own Rifle Corps formed in 1859 at Nottingham Castle. (50 mins)

'Wipers Times' The story of this unique news sheet printed in the front line during 1914-18, the creation of a little known Sherwood Foresters Officer. (50 mins)

'Sherwood Foresters Memorial - Tyne Cot, Belgium 2009' The story of the organisation and arrangements from the glimmer of an idea to fruition of the opening of the Memorial at Tyne Cot by the Lords Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire in October 2009. (60 mins)

'The Irish Rebellion of Easter 1916' The story of the dramatic effects which occurred in Dublin during Easter 1916 when a bid for Irish Independence took place. A story of love, courage and gallantry and the part the Sherwood Foresters played in the events. (60+ mins)

'Men from Your Locality' We take a look at some of the men from your locality who served in The Sherwood Foresters during its various wars and campaigns. Where did they come from? What did they do? How old were they? Did they survive and if not how and when did they die? (60 mins)

'The 45th during the Napoleonic War': A look at how one of Wellington's most trusted and stolid Regiments came face to face repeatedly with the French war machine.

'Redcoats of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire': An exploration of men of the local area in the age of powder, muskets and industrialisation.
